Originally, Emma Stone was supposed to play the lead role, and it was going to be based on Clara Bow. There ended up being scheduling conflicts though, and Margot Robbie replaced her. Thanks to the change, the role had to be reworked to make the character more fictional in nature. Damien Chazelle has said that working with Margot was an absolute treat, but he’s also said that there’s a version of the film that was completely filmed on his phone in his backyard with him, his wife, and Diego Calva playing every role.
