There was an earlier draft of the script that had a reference to Robin being related to Rachel Dawes. While Dick Grayson wasn’t explicitly mentioned, Rachel Dawes was revealed to be a relative of the Grayson family. Ultimately, Nolan decided to remove this from the script since he didn’t want to build up the hopes of the fans thinking that Robin would appear in a future film. As for the Joker, many actors publicly expressed interest in taking the role without knowing that Nolan always wanted Heath Ledger. Some of those actors were Paul Bettany, Lachy Hulme, Adrien Brody, Steve Carell, and Robin Williams.
