26,998A Batman reference is made! Early in the movie we find out that Charlie's dad was fired from the toothpaste factory, and we can see that the toothpaste being created is called Smilex. This is the same name of the poisonous gas that the Joker created in the 1989 movie, ‘Batman.’ Both Batman and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory were movies directed by Tim Burton, hence why he put the little easter egg in a nod to the latter of the movies.
