The writer, John Hughes, was adamant about everyone sticking to the script when they deliver their lines, but he was more lenient for his friend John Candy. In fact, almost all of Candy’s dialogue was actually improvised. Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern weren’t too sure about the movie’s potential while they were shooting, so they intentionally gave over-the-top performances. Neither one of them thought that the movie would become the huge success and classic that it is today, but their over-the-top performances became staples for their characters and the series.
