37,433Jon Favreau had a lot of issues with Marvel that led to him not coming back to direct Iron Man 3. Jon and Marvel had a lot of friction due to Marvel constantly intervening. They even had him rewrite the script as the film was still shooting. Marvel wanted Jon to add more elements of the S.H.I.E.L.D. subplot due to the fact that they were trying to establish the bigger Marvel Cinematic Universe, but they were willing to sacrifice the coherency of Iron Man 2’s plot to do so. Thanks to this, Jon decided not to return for Iron Man 3.
