182Originally, the film was set to be picked up by Columbia Pictures in 1992 when the comic debuted, but Macfarlane wasn’t happy with the creative differences with the studio. Negotiations fell through, and he ended up selling the rights to New Line Cinema for a dollar in exchange for creative control and merchandising rights. Originally, the film was given a rated R rating, and pieces of the film were taken out to give it a PG-13 rating. When the film was released, it wound up getting the R rating anyways, and people who have seen both edits can barely tell the difference.
