Die Hard (TG16) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of Pack-in-Video's 1990 Japanese-exclusive license-based run-and-gun action game for the PC Engine, Die Hard (ダイハード).
Since this is a Japanese game, I recorded this using Spinner 8 and DarknessSavior's English translation patch.
Die Hard for the PC Engine (the Japanese name for the TurboGrafx-16) for some reason never made its way to the US, despite Die Hard being an American movie, and it's a shame. The PC Engine game certainly pulls off a good Bloody Wolf/Final Zone 2-style shooter that I personally prefer quite a bit over the (still enjoyable) NES Die Hard game.
It's nowhere near as faithful to the film as the NES game was - I mean, seriously, why is he wandering around in a swamp? - but there's some fun, excessively macho dialogue, and the action is much smoother and easier to control than the NES game was. It's also a lot more straightforward; except for the annoying maze level, the level design closer to Heavy Barrel than it is to True Lies. I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Even if it really doesn't bear any resemblance to the movie, it's more than good enough to warrant a play.
I know I'm stretching the Christmas theme with this one since nothing in the game gives any hint of festivities, unless you count the fancy reinterpretation of Ode to Joy at the ending screen, but still, it's based on Die Hard. Die Hard takes place a Christmastime, so I figure I'm covered. Hope you enjoy it!
Happy trails, and happy holidays!
