A playthrough of Deep Silver's 2013 Christmas-themed expansion for Saints Row IV on Windows PCs, How the Saints Save Christmas.

I've loved the Saints Row games ever since playing the first one on the Xbox 360 back about ten years ago. They've always been irreverent, absurd, vulgar, and side-splittingly funny.

This Christmas DLC for the fourth game in the series keeps up that tradition quite well. It's a self-contained set of three missions that feature your main character - the president of the United States, and Christmas grinch - having to save Santa from a computer simulation of the real world. It takes place in an "alternate" 1953, and of course exploits the potential for a few Back to the Future jokes along the way.

After you steal a BB-gun (sorry Ralphie, we got there first!) from a local storefront, things go downhill quickly. Clawz zooms in and uses his ray gun to turn people into killer gingerbread men, generally ruining the festive cheer of the city.

Once you've cleared the first couple of goals, you get all of your powers and weapons back, which is when things really heat up. Between the Christmas-music dub-step gun and my trusty black hole launcher, I lay waste to everything pretty effectively, all while looking like the most messed-up superhero ever.

I love Saints Row's character creation flexibility. Is there any other game where I'd be able to create such a perfectly hideous protagonist?

What I love most about this game though is how effectively it maintains a hyper-Christmas feeling while completely going against everything the holiday is thought to stand for. The carnage here is amazing, and it all looks pretty nice framed with the lit-up trees, bells, and wreathes hanging all about. I was also thoroughly amused by the option to try to lick a door open.

Whether you like Saints Row or not, the story and gameplay here is pure comedic gold (extremely low-brow comedic gold, mind you), and it seemed like a fun, atypical way to celebrate Christmas day.

Finally, I'm not sure if this warning is necessary, but regardless, let me be explicit: this video is not kid-friendly. Not at all. If you really want to watch it with your kid(s) nearby, please preview it first and decide if you're alright with it. I'm not a grinch or a prude by any means, but there are elements here that aren't in any way appropriate for elementary schooler's eyes.
