Ninja Gaiden: Movie Edition compiles all of the cutscenes of Tecmo's 1989 NES game into a "movie." There aren't any gameplay elements shown - just plot sequences.

Ninja Gaiden was an amazing action title when it came out. It was insanely difficult, but the action was fast and non-stop, the soundtrack was awesome, and it was a pioneer for in-game storytelling. The lengthy cutscenes - all with large, (minimally) animated elements like you'd see in Genesis and TurboGrafx games - told a pretty dramatic and heavy-handed story, making it far more adult and engaging than many games on the NES. There are a lot of mature themes here that you rarely see on the NES thanks to Nintendo's family-friend policies. It was truly groundbreaking stuff back in 1989.

And it totally thrashed the arcade game released under the same name. No question.

In putting this video together, I didn't merely paste the cutscenes together back-to-back. I've reformatted the whole thing, scene-by-scene, to look better on HD screens while staying faithful to the original presentation. The whole thing is now 16:9, and all of the images and text blocks have been resized, cropped, and/or otherwise edited to keep the image sharp and the proportions accurate. I really was careful to avoid making it look smeary and distorted (like those awful videos of old games that have been stretched out to fill the 16:9 frame). No filters were used to smooth or otherwise change the nature of the original picture - I wanted the pixels to be visible, and SuperEagle on such a low-resolution, low color source looks super artificial and gross. I shrank the text portion of the screen to sharpen the print and to give more room for the images, and each of the images have been scaled up to fill as much of the frame as possible without sacrificing any important screen elements.

Hopefully you like the format! I thought it came out well :)

And one question that has always bugged me - maybe someone might know. I'm pretty sure Ryu Hayabusa is meant to be Japanese. The whole ninja thing, and the Japanese name, and being far away from the Amazon - I think Japanese is a fair assumption. So if Ryu is from Japan, why is he white?

Yeah, I just went Karen Smith there. Don't hate.
