101A playthrough of Data East's 1991 arcade platformer, Caveman Ninja, as it appears on the 2010 "Data East Arcade Classics" compilation for the Nintendo Wii.
Played through on the default settings.
Caveman Ninja, better known as Joe & Mac in North America and Europe, is a classic side-scrolling platformer that never really received much hype when it was in arcades. However, gamers in the early 90s were availed of a number of ports for console and computer systems, and they were all generally of quite high quality and sold quite well. Regardless of the ways the coin-op Caveman Ninja failed to perform, the well-done 8 and 16-bit conversions won over quite a number of fans. I know I, for one, thoroughly loved the SNES port when it came out in 1992 - we must have rented it about a million times.
It's so bright and colorful, and the music sounds great for such an old game (though I have to admit I prefer the SNES version's remixes over these original ones), and it's quite a bit harder than it looks. Though the game gives you tons of items to refill your life bar, unlike the SNES version, you get sent back to a checkpoint every time you die. It's not terribly difficult once you memorize the boss patterns, but it's never a pushover, even in stage one.
This emulation of it is quite good, too. There aren't any fancy features like scanlines or any sort of filtering, but the emulation is good enough, and it plays well even with the basic sideways Wii-mote layout.
If you have fond memories of one of the home versions like I do, or if you just like good old arcade games that didn't take themselves too seriously, there's a lot to like here - especially when you consider that this Wii-exclusive compilation packed a few other huge classics on the same disc.
