I really wanted to like this game and I do honestly believe there is a good game here. The game does go back to its more survival horror roots, at least with the cutscenes and story. The game is actually a lot more action oriented even compared to 2. You now have a gun with infinite ammo and a jet pack that gives you a dash, jump and hover. Which is really cool. You also get a drone that helps fight and some limited ammo additions for your gun. The game has a similar point system to the first game and you can spend those points on upgrades which include your health. The upgrades are insanely expensive and seems that the game wants you to grind which I really didn't do. The game is hard and not for good reasons. Since you have a jet pack there is now platforming none of which is all that hard. It can be a bit rough in a few situations but never all that bad. The real challenge from the game is the combat and not for your typical reasons. I tend to hear people complain about stuff and usually roll my eyes because it more often than not is blown out of proportion. The complaints about the camera in this game are real and valid. The real challenge in this game is trying to work with the camera. At times it's dynamic and moves around the environment and other times static, but one thing is for sure it will change angles on you when you least expect it to and it will cause you to take unnecessary damage. Enemies are fast and hit hard. Some have range and others will leap at you from nowhere. To its benefit and detriment there are only 3 enemy types and that is good and bad. It's a shame there aren't more cool enemies, but you at least get to understand them better since you see them all the time. There just never is a way to prepare for an attack you cannot see. The bosses are a bit better and there is a variety to them. The camera will follow them around as long as you are off the wall, but it still is questionable. The bosses also seem to have way too much health even if you are spamming you sub weapons and drones. I am sure there is some mechanic I ignored or didn't know about that helps. The boss fights do drag on, though most of the boss designs are really freaking cool. Speaking of cool things. The ship you are on is freaking awesome. I love exploring spaceships and I especially dig isolation horror and the atmosphere is pretty great. One of the coolest mechanics is that the ship is basically a transformer and can change shape. When it does it alters how you can maneuver your way through. Sometimes you'll be climbing a vertical shaft and then you alter the ship and you are floating through the same section in zero g horizontally. The ship changing mechanic is just so damn cool. It was probably my favorite part. There is a lot to like about this game, genuinely. If they remastered this game and changed the camera into a more traditional behind the back 3D shooter this game would be amazing. It feels great to zip around in combat shooting enemies. I just wish I could see what I was shooting at. The silly thing is that there is a 1st person mode that lets you see the environment though you are stuck in your position It's a strange choice and seems like the developers knew the fixed camera in a 3D environment is a flawed choice. The game has its moments and has its frustrations. I desperately want to like this game, I jst cannot rationalize it the way it is. Enjoy my blind playthrough.
