Dirt 4 - GTX670 High Preset Gameplay
First impressions review:
It's funny, if it weren't for Dirt Rally I'd probably have nothing but praise for this game.
Looking at this game as part of the Colin McRae rally series, this is a great entry. The stage generation consistently makes fun stages to run through. As expected, track side details have taken a hit, but as far as elevation, corner complexity and design go, it works very well. Weather effects and damage are all done very well as expected. The cars are fun to drive and sound great.
However, looking at what Dirt Rally did well, this is mostly a downgrade.
Cars have too much lateral grip, even in wet conditions. The FF and 4WD cars probably came out the most unscathed but when you jump into the RWD cars this issue becomes most apparent. You can just mash the throttle out of corners and the rear end will barely step out and the gobs of torque these cars have is apparently transferred through the road through magic tires that bite into the gravel like it was tarmac. Speaking of, the asphalt handling has substantially improved from Dirt Rally and cars feel a lot better and behave more as you'd expect them to in this new game. So that's nice.
Force feedback felt pretty good in Dirt Rally but now it feels muted and about a decade old. Anyone who's played GTR2 or GT Legends with the default FF will know how it feels. There's enough communication through the wheel to get you by, but we know the FF can feel so much better. Codemasters have done this better in the past so I don't know what's happened here.
I've seen some reviews say they really like the licensed music, I guess they like the basic bitch playlists spotify is always advertising too, because that's exactly what you'll be hearing for the most part. Not a big deal but it's still annoying.
Overall Dirt 4 is a good game. The car selection is a little limited but the variety is still there, the track generation works really well and I can see it keeping me interested in the game for longer than Dirt Rally as a result. The handling while a disappointing downgrade in how the cars feel compared to Dirt Rally is still solid and enjoyable.
If you've enjoyed the older Colin McRae games or Dirt 1 and 2 you will be very happy with this game. If you expected Dirt Rally with more content you will come away feeling dissatisfied.
I think pretty much all the major problems could potentially be fixed through patches but who knows if that will happen.
