Disabling cellular data roaming on your iPhone is essential if you want to avoid unexpected charges while traveling internationally. When roaming is enabled, your iPhone may connect to mobile networks outside your carrier’s coverage area, which often leads to high data usage fees depending on your mobile plan. Turning it off ensures that your iPhone uses data only from your carrier’s approved networks.

To disable data roaming, open the Settings app on your iPhone. From the main menu, tap on Cellular. In this section, you’ll see your data and network settings. Next, tap on Cellular Data Options, which may be labeled slightly differently depending on your carrier or region.

Inside the Cellular Data Options menu, look for the setting labeled Data Roaming. You’ll see a toggle next to it. If the toggle is green, it means data roaming is currently enabled. Tap the toggle to turn it off. Once disabled, your iPhone will no longer use mobile data services while you’re roaming, though calls and SMS might still work depending on your carrier.

This setting is especially important if you are traveling abroad or near a country border, where your iPhone might automatically switch to a foreign network. Keeping data roaming turned off prevents unintentional data connections and helps you control your mobile expenses.

You can always re-enable data roaming if you purchase a travel data plan or want access to mobile internet while abroad.
