How to Set Up Messenger (Meta) for First Time Users

Setting up Messenger for the first time is simple, especially if you already have a Facebook account. Messenger is Meta’s dedicated messaging platform that allows users to send texts, voice messages, make calls, share photos, and interact with Facebook friends outside of the main Facebook app. This video explains the complete setup process for first-time users on both Android and iOS devices.
To begin, open the Play Store or App Store and search for 'Messenger' by Meta. Download and install the app. Once installed, open the app. If you're already logged into Facebook on your phone, Messenger will automatically detect your account and log you in without requiring separate credentials. If not, you’ll be prompted to sign in using your Facebook email or phone number and password.
Once logged in, you may be asked whether you'd like to sync your phone contacts. This allows Messenger to show you which of your contacts are also using the app, making it easier to connect. This step is optional—you can skip it if you prefer to keep your phone contacts separate.
Next, you’ll be prompted to allow notifications so Messenger can alert you when you receive new messages. You can enable or skip this based on your preferences. After setup, the app will load your existing conversations from Facebook. You’ll see tabs for Chats, People (to view who's online), and Stories shared by friends. Tap the three-line menu icon for access to settings, including active status, privacy controls, and notification preferences.
