Among the various ways to upgrade/increase your stats are shards. These are randomly obtained from killing enemies and will increase a particular stat a fixed amount. This allows you to have unreasonably powerful fighters without a ton of time/effort.

Each shard tells you exactly how much it gives, so if it has 100 HP, then using it will increase your character by 100 HP. You can also combine all the shards into one item to save space/time. Combining them into one item does NOT increase the stats, it just saves you the time/hassle of applying multiple of them to a single character. So don't combine them if you want to share the wealth between your characters.
