After assisting Bruce Wayne/Batman and Diana Prince/Wonder Woman in thwarting a failed bank heist by Al Falcone's terrorist group in Gotham City, Barry Allen/The Flash returns to his childhood home and reminisces about his life with his parents Nora and Henry, before Henry's wrongful imprisonment for Nora's murder. Overwhelmed by emotions, Barry accidentally uses the Speed Force to travel back in time to earlier that day and informs Bruce about it. Despite Bruce's warnings about the unintended consequences of time travel, Barry goes back to the day of Nora's death and prevents it from happening. Upon returning to the present, another speedster from the Speed Force strikes him, and he ends up in an alternative 2013 where his mother is alive. There, he encounters his younger self and realizes that he has arrived on the day he originally gained his powers.

Barry and his younger self head to the Central City Police Department, where Barry forces 2013-Barry to be struck by lightning, simulating the accident that gave him his powers. Both Barrys are eventually struck by lightning, granting 2013-Barry his powers but causing Barry to lose his own. As Barry struggles to train 2013-Barry in using his newfound abilities, they witness a broadcast of General Zod preparing to invade Earth. The two Barrys attempt to assemble the Justice League but fail as, in this timeline, they cannot find Diana, Victor Stone/Cyborg hasn't acquired his powers yet, and Arthur Curry/Aquaman was never born. They travel to Wayne Manor hoping to find Batman, but instead, they encounter an alternative, older version of Bruce who has retired from crime-fighting. Bruce explains the concept of the multiverse, revealing that using time travel not only affects events after the alteration but also those that came before, explaining why Barry notices changes in the timeline that occurred before his initial time-travel point. The two Barrys persuade Bruce to help them find Kal-El/Superman.

Using a backdoor connection with NASA in the Batcave, Barry and Bruce locate a Kryptonian pod supposedly discovered in Siberia. However, upon arrival, they find Kal-El's niece, Kara Zor-El/Supergirl, instead. After rescuing Kara from the facility, Barry asks Bruce to help him regain his powers by recreating the original accident. The first attempt fails, and Barry nearly dies, leading Kara to fly him into the storm and get struck by lightning a second time, successfully restoring his powers. Kara and Bruce join the two Barrys to battle Zod's forces. During the fight with Zod, Kara discovers that he intercepted the escape pod of a young Kal-El, killing him during a failed attempt to retrieve the Codex necessary to repopulate the Kryptonian species, revealing that the Codex resides within Kara. The two engage in a fight, with Zod overpowering and killing Kara and obtaining the Codex from her blood, while Bruce also gets killed.

The two Barrys travel back in time to save their comrades but find themselves unable to alter their fate. Barry realizes that they cannot save them, but 2013-Barry persists in trying, repeatedly traveling back in time but always failing. As 2013-Barry continues his time-traveling attempts, the multiverse begins to collapse. Eventually, the corrupted speedster who originally struck Barry from the Speed Force returns, revealed to be a future version of 2013-Barry, who still believes he can save his world from Zod and prevent Bruce and Kara's deaths. He explains the causal loop paradox that led to his own creation but becomes enraged when Barry reveals his intention to undo the timeline changes by letting Nora die. In a fit of anger, the dark speedster attempts to kill Barry but ends up impaling 2013-Barry, who sacrifices himself to save Barry and erase the dark speedster from the timeline.
