Dolly was born on the 5th of July 1996 and proved that a cell taken from a specific part of the body could be used to recreate a whole individual. This in turn led to great leaps forward in the promising field of stem cells.

After successfully producing six lambs Dolly developed lung cancer caused by a viral infection and was put to sleep 5 months short of her 7th birthday…

She was then stuffed and placed on display in the National Museum of Scotland.

Despite it being relatively early…her breed of sheep have a maximum lifespan of 12 years…her death was determined to be unrelated to her cloning

And the other, later copies of Dolly’s cell line…named Debbie, Denise, Dianna, and Daisy…lived to the ripe old age of 10 before they too were euthanized.

Fun Fact: the cell used to clone Dolly was taken from a mammary gland and as a result the researchers named her after Dolly Parton who famously has a set of large mammary glands.
