With the PS5 and Series X consoles coming out this year, the games industry is entering a next gen hardware transition. What new opportunities does this create? What game categories wither in these milestone years, and which prosper? What does a new console war mean for teams working on all of the other platforms in 2020-21?
Don Daglow has worked in the games industry since the first console war, when he led the Intellivision game design team, Atari's largest rival. He's been presenting conference sessions on the topic for every hardware transition since the launch of the PS1 over 25 years ago. In this talk he'll review lessons from past console cycles, issues that face non-console dev teams, and ways that teams can take advantage of new systems even without creating games for those platforms.
