9Doom 3 was a commercial success for id Software and was one of the top selling games of 2004, alongside Halo 2 for the Xbox and Half-Life 2. The financial success was bolstered by the near-record number of pre-orders placed for the game making it go “gold” a month before release.
id Software also benefited, at least for a while, by licensing the engine used in the game to other developers. Several games were developed using a modified Doom 3 engine, including Quake 4, Prey, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, Wolfenstein, and Brink.
