Harold and Kumar go to White Castle was originally scripted as a quest for donuts from Krispy Kreme but they said no because they didn’t want to be part of a film featuring drug use…White Castle stepped in and though they didn’t pay anything to be part of the film they helped promote it in their stores.

For months after the film’s release the Krispy Kreme execs probably felt vindicated because though the film tested well and received positive reviews it proved such a disappointment at the box office that the studio canceled the sequel.

But the film’s surprise and massive success after it was released on DVD in January 2005 resurrected that sequel and White Castle gained massive brand awareness globally…but it's unclear how much they benefitted as they were and remain a comparatively tiny franchise with just 350 locations….though from personal experience when I moved to the states and stumbled upon a white castle the only reason I went in was the movie…so you know they made 10 bucks 15 years later and I can’t be the alone in this (I hope!).

Fun Fact: If Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle writers Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg hadn’t locked in Harris their second choice was Ralph Machhio from Karate Kid…who they now work with on Cobra Kai…

According to Harris he found out that he was in Harold and Kumar go to White Castle from a friend who was auditioning for the production.

In the credit’s he’s also listed as playing “Neil Patrick Harris” as opposed to “Himself” to create some distance between this fictional version and his real life….
