The surprise and then continued success of the AvP comics, first released in 1989, breathed life into the possibility of crossover between Alien and Predator and excited many sci-fi fans including the filmmakers working on Predator 2 who famously included a xenomorph skull among the trophies on display in the Predator’s ship. This tantalizing but brief moment seems to have further gripped the imaginations of AvP fans eventually leading Resident Evil Director Paul WS Anderson to write a script which was greenlit in 2003 (after some rewrites) and received a ~$50 million budget and a tight 7 month timeline. The PG 13 rating and the hype around the two big sci-fi monsters of the 80s coming together helped the movie make a sizable profit but it failed to impress the critics who called it dull and bland and divided the fan base.
