DOOM 64 - Absolution Of Evil
Let the darkness consume you, the edge will take over. With the massive success that Doom had on the PC, Consoles wanted their share of that pie with systems getting ports throughout the 90's up to the early 2000's. Midway Games who worked on the PlayStation version, would work on Doom: The Absolution before in April 1997 releasing Doom 64 in the USA then on December 2nd 1997 in Europe. The biggest surprise? Doom 64 would see the light of day on modern systems and consoles as a pre-order for Doom Eternal in March 2020, compliments of Nightdive Studios.
Doom 64 is the work of Randy Estrella, Tim Heydelaar, Danny Lewis and composer Aubrey Hodges with 32 maps and a story that is a spin off of the main Doom series, the second one after Final Doom: A being known as the "Mother Demon" has re-incarnated demons to be something even worse and deadlier, As the Doomguy from the original 3 episodes, Thy Flesh consumed and Doom II, It's time to raise hell and send the demons back where they came from.
Firstly, Doom 64's sprites, sounds, engine, enemies and even weapons are fully redesigned for this unique game with darker and much more gruesome looking enemies, Colored lighting that the PlayStation version of Doom had and unsettling ambience vs actual music that only Aubrey Hodges could provide to give Doom 64 that much more evil feel compared to the PC version, or the other console versions.
Notablely, Doom 64 has a password system for each level and is built on the emphasis of continous play vs saving, something I knew of back on original hardware and a CRT TV which led to many restarts if you died, Thankfully this re-release has a save option and a quicksave option as death can happen quickly in Doom 64. I had skipped "Hectic" this time as that map.. God does it make me mad and it pissed me off just as much on the original n64 release.
A brand new episode, "The Lost Levels" is included in the 2020 re-release which was created by Kaiser (Samuel Vaillarreal), 9 levels in total that fill the gap between Doom's 2016 Reboot and the events of Doom Eternal by referencing the Slayer's Testament, The episode feels somewhat lazy as the "Sister Resurrector" related to the Mother Demon is the final boss of the map Final Judgement. Hectic unlocks a bunch of levels known as the "Fun Levels" which are not really much but to challenge you, with Lost Levels adding a 4rth one, I find Doom 64 even today, a pretty gritty and fun game that all FPS players should try out.
