Map: La Muerta Island (Avactor.wad MAP01)
Category: UV Max (all kills and secrets on Ultraviolence)
Time: 11:22.09
Source Port: dsda-doom v0.19.7 (-complevel 9)

Avactor is an 11 map (+1 end map) wad by Eradrop, released in 2018 and also winning one of that year's Cacowards. The wad is distinctive for its rich Mesoamerican setting, with massive, lushly detailed maps, and reskinned enemies to fit (there are also a couple new and altered enemies, such as the cacodemons you can see in this map, which have faster projectiles but slightly less health). The wad doesn't slouch in gameplay either, with plenty of action keeping things lively. Some of the traps are a bit cheap, but it fits with the theme. :P

This map, being the first of the set, introduces the fundamentals of the wad, including devilish traps and hectic combat, but keeps things relatively light compared to later maps.

I spent far too many attempts resetting in the first minute, due to either unsatisfactory movement (running into walls and such) or messing up on the second secret, the one with the platforming section. For that secret, you have to take a specific path on the way to the rocket launcher (though not on the way back). This path is visible on the automap, though I had long since memorized it by the time I was recording this demo, and following that path didn't give me too much trouble. Killing the imps, on the other hand, gave me a lot of trouble, either due to running out of ammo (I skipped a backpack from the first secret to save a bit of time) or knocking the imps off the platforms into the pit below. Repeating that first minute over and over again got old quickly.

Fortunately, the rest of the map is more fun. I do wish there were some more rockets or a plasma gun so I could really unload on grouped-up enemies, but what the map provides is still sufficient.

One quirk I think is worth pointing out in the context of a UV Max is that lost souls in this wad are tracked by the kill counters. Good thing there's only one pain elemental in this map.

I'd like to record the rest of this wad at some point, but I'm not sure yet if/when I'll have the time and patience to do so. (I still haven't done Preacher MAP09 yet either, besides that NoMo 100S run...)
