Finally! Another WAD tackled! I had left it for quite some time, mostly because I had thought the last 2 maps would be above my skill ceiling. But here I am nearly 2 years later, proving myself how far i've come.
Map 31 happened about 3-4 months ago, either before or during my freshers week at university. Therefore my knowledge of the map is sorta limited. In terms of strategy, I don't really know how to consistently beat it. I guess you gotta just circle slowly around the perimeter but chances of dying are still high. I was thinking something along the lines of just (no rhythm involved), but I couldn't really pull it off since my brain sorta wires itself around simple rhythms.
Map 32 on the other hand, I may have actually figured a strategy for. There could quite possibly be a video uploaded on how to exactly pull off this strategy in practice but I may as well type it all out in this description. The start and the middle sections are pretty straight forward. Monsters gradually teleport in faster but there's nothing too serious that's there to throw you off. Simply circle strafe, spam whatever weapon you're using and you'll be good. A trick I tend to use is swapping to the plasma early, that way you can avoid splashing yourself in the face and risking an early death.
Onto the end bit, notoriously very hard and is described in many ways, the most commonly used phrase being "rng". I can sorta say that yes, a lot of it depends on rng since you're basically crammed and almost forced to tank hits from HKs and Barons. However, after being able to consistently get through this section, I can happily say that I have sort of come up with my own strategy. Whether it doesn't make a difference or not, idk, it could have just simply been really good luck.
Now, to share the strategy so that you too could have a crack at YUM map 32:
A pattern you can instantly notice with how the monsters teleport in is that all the really powerful ones (the cyberdemons), start teleporting into the map in a clockwise motion, similar to how the clock works in the map. Knowing this, when the final and hardest wave begins, position yourself on the other end of the clock (4 to 8). Keep manoeuvring through to those points, trying to avoid getting your tracers caught on a cyber. With how monsters work in doom, they'll often move towards you unless they're infighting. Taking this into account, more HKs and Barons will spawn in than cyberdemons, so you can end up getting them to infight by simply not interacting with them. The arena is crowded so you're very unlikely to be targeted for long (unless you simply hit them with BFG tracers).
As the cyberdemons slowly teleport clockwise around the arena, start moving back and forth clockwise. Like when the cyber moves around the 6 mark, you should be at the 10 to 2 mark. Eventually, when all the cyberdemons have teleported in, now it's safe to start circle strafing around the arena, finishing them all off.
This strat is really complicated to understand in words, and I feel like a diagram may be more beneficial as to how it works. Either that or you can watch the video and understand it through that. Please let me know in the comments if you want an analysis video on YUM map 32.
Overall, I can happily say that no, YUM map 32 is not a mistake. It's a genius concept that's simply overshadowed by sheer difficulty. I had an absolute blast playing all the YUM maps, as many of the maps had improved my skill ceiling with doom as a whole! I can also gladly say that YUM map 32 is now technically my new hardest map!
