DoomRL is capable of modding using what is called the "sandbox", which allows to run single levels at a time. However, this doesn't mean you can't change just about everything there is. I've been working on a DoomRL mod I call "HereticRL", changing the weapons, enemies, items, sounds, and even music to that of Heretic. I've produced a demo to show off the kinds of changes I've made to the game, and this is a video of that demo.

EDIT: There used to be links here for DoomRL v.0.9.9.3, but since v.0.9.9.4 is just about released, I'll explain how to try the demo on that version instead. You'll need the newest version, which will be at this link when it is released: http://doom.chaosforge.org/downloads

Part of the game's main menu now includes an option called "Custom Game", which allows you to access mods (modules) without any hassle. In the modding subforum of the Chaosforge forums, I will post the WAD file necessary to run the HereticRL Demo. Save the file into the modules folder of your DoomRL directory and, the next time you start DoomRL, it should appear in the modules list. Here's a link to said modding subforum:
