DOS Longplay: Disney's Aladdin Walkthrough

Video game adaptations usually spell disaster, especially if the movie it's based on falls into the wrong hands (like LJN !). Fortunately, it's not the case with Disney's Aladdin released by Virgin Entertainment for the DOS and Sega Genesis. If you recall, the same company made The Jungle Book and The Lion King games, so this one is just as good ! It follows the movie quite close, recreating as many scenes as possible: Agrabah market, the cave, the magic carpet ride, the meeting with Genie and of course the fight with Jafar at the end. The graphics are pretty impressive: colorful, detailed and very well animated for the DOS. Sure, it may not look like much nowadays, but this is the DOS after all, so you can't really ask for more at that time. The soundtracks are also adapted from the movie, which is what you'd expect from a movie with so many songs. What about the gameplay ? Well it's pretty intense, just like a game based on Aladdin should be: you run around, slash enemies with your sword and collect various items like rubies and apples. The apples act as ammo and can be thrown to hit enemies from a distance instead of using the sword. The sword has a limited range, making it hard to kill anyone without taking a hit yourself. Although the apples have a longer range, there's no difference in the number of hits required to take down an enemy: it's the same regardless of whether you hit them with the sword or with apples. The rubies can be exchanged for extra lives whenever you come across the merchant's stall - a life costs 10 rubies. The Genie's head unlocks a bonus round between levels, similar to "Press Your Luck": a series of items flashes briefly on screen at random and whichever you stop at when hitting a key, you earn: an extra life, extra apples or extra rubies. If you stop on Jafar's head however, the bonus round ends and you don't earn anything. In another bonus stage you take control of Abu, Aladdin's monkey, and try to grab as many rubies as possible while dodging falling objects. The stage ends when Abu gets hit by something. Overall, the gameplay is great, but there's one big problem, one fatal flaw that ruins the whole game: there's no save feature ! The game is pretty long to begin with and it also becomes pretty hard in the later stages, so there's no excuse not to be able to save it ! For this reason, you can't stop the game and resume it later - you have to beat it all in one sitting, which is pretty brutal (it took me a good 4 hours !). It seems all Virgin Entertainment games suffer from this problem, as neither The Lion King nor The Jungle Book have a save feature ! This is easily the biggest problem with the game. Other than that, there are really no major flaws with this game. The point is that the game is fun and well executed and with enough practice and patience, you'll eventually overlook the lack of a way to save it and resume it at a later time. Give it a shot, you'll like it !
