For my Christmas special this year I thought I might as well do the sequel to Prehistorik. Why do I regard this as special ? Because it's one of the hardest and annoying games I've ever played on the DOS: harder than Dragon's Lair, harder than Adventure Island on NES and harder than the first Prehistorik ! You haven't seen anything until you've tried the sequel ! It's a combination of bad controls, cheap difficulty, annoying screen panning and bad password system. Yes, unlike the first one, it actually has passwords, but it doesn't make things any easier, because there's a pretty good chance you'll die before actually finding the damn password ! That's right, you don't get the password as soon as you start a new level - noooo - not like other games - you have to FIND it first ! First of all, the path that you take may not always lead to the password, so you might not find it at all ! Second, not all levels have the passwords in plain sight - some are hidden in the deepest, most distant corners of the level, often in sub-areas, where no one would ever think to go, so you have the choice of trying to find the password but risk dying in the process, or push on with the level, hoping you make it to the next one. But then good luck finding the password there ! Why couldn't the password be right at the beginning of the level ? What game gives you the password only after you've gone through half the level ? I can't imagine what there were thinking ! The controls aren't the worst I've experienced - they're certainly better than the first Prehistorik, but not by a whole lot. The attacking and jumping are way better: the caveman jumps higher, like you'd expect a character to jump in a platform game and the bat stays out long enough to hit your enemies, though there are still times when no matter how well you time it, the enemy will still hit you at least once ! You can also attack diagonally up or down by pressing the respective arrow keys, although to swing the bat upwards, you have to press the UP arrow key which is the same key used for jumping, so you could end up jumping right into the enemy you're trying to hit. You have to press UP slightly after you hit the space bar ! The no. 1 issue I have with this game is the way the camera moves ! Yes, the damn camera is your worst enemy ! Unlike other games, say Super Mario or Jazz Jackabbit, the screen doesn't follow the caveman continuously, so when you approach the side of the screen, the screen freezes for a split second and THEN pans over. It's similar to Kid-Kool on NES (watch a video of that to see what I'm talking about). It's hard to explain, but basically the camera pans way too slowly, causing nothing but trouble. It's especially problematic when you're trying to hop across small platforms: the camera doesn't pan fast enough, so there's no way you can land on an off-screen platform, because you can't see it until it's too late, which results in some cheap deaths. You shouldn't have to wait for the damn screen to pan ! The screen just does wherever the hell it wants - bottom line. Even the first Prehistorik game had smoother screen animations - not perfect, but playable. Not to mention, the screens had well defined boundaries, so you couldn't stand in-between two screens - the camera was either on one screen or on the other, it never had to constantly reorient when the character approached the edge ! With all these factors combined, the game is challenging, but in a cheap way ! It may not seem so bad in the first stages, but once you reach around level 4, GOD DAMN ! The frustration comes out full-fu**in'-force ! You only get 3 hitpoints, meaning you can only get hit 3 times. The fourth hit kills you and you lose a life. Once you lose all of them, it's game over, so hopefully you have a password or you're screwed - you're doing it all over again ! There are also a lot of instant death hazards, like spikes, and let me tell you, this game got really carried away with that, especially in the last level: there's spikes on the floor, spikes on the walls, spikes on the ceiling, there's spikes EVERYWHERE - you get annihilated ! There's no way you can be expected to make it through in one piece with no cheats ! On top of that, add a truckload of enemies that pop out of nowhere because of the shitty screen movement and you're in for a mind-fuck ! End of story ! For the video, I used a trainer that keeps you from losing hitpoints or lives, but that still meant it took me all day to get through the last castle ! Can you imagine beating this game with just 3 lousy hitpoints ? If you did, then congratulations, because you have an amazing level of patience and pain-tolerance ! Not a bad game overall, but the difficulty is crazy high ! Danny out.
