As with most of DA:O's major quests, the possession of Connor is a situation with several possible outcomes depending both on immediate player choices and how earlier quests were (or weren't) resolved. Not all options are clearly communicated by the game, but perhaps the biggest issue here is psychological. As gamers we've been taught to expect the illusion of choice (see Telltale's The Walking Dead or Quantic Dream's Heavy Rain), whereas it's fair to say that Dragon Age: Origins goes quite a bit further than most recent RPGs in allowing for actual player agency.
