Age Of Wonders 4 had a huge launch for a relatively obscure game, peaking at 42k players, but it's now down to 1k players. I wanted to find out if the Watcher Update has made Age Of Wonders 4 better or not, so I decided to give it another shot since I started the channel with Age Of Wonders 4. We're starting underground this time as the Dragon Lord Deez Nutz leading industrious Lizardfolks who are poisonous and adapted to the underground, with a focus on runesmithing and artifact hoarding to generate both gold and mana from our hoard of Hero Items. Our first Tome is the Tome of Rock.

The biggest issues with AoW 4 is probably down to the AI, which is not an uncommon problem with 4X games, especially ones that recently launched. It can be quite difficult to create an effective AI that can play a complicated 4X game, even with huge bonuses to research and production to outweigh the inefficiencies of most AI, which are really just scripts, not neural networks. There were also a good deal of bugs and issues, most of which seem to have been fixed I'm glad to say.

However, there is a bit of a fundamental issue with the game that is also present in Humankind, which tried, and seems to have failed, to beat the Civilization series: too much player choice. The ability to choose such a large number of tomes in addition to the huge customization of each faction is impressive and nice, but I get the feeling that there end up being obvious paths to success that get chosen over and over, just like in Humankind.

Still, I think AoW 4 is fundamentally a good game that has built upon its foundations with the Watcher Update, and I'm looking forward to seeing what the big AI update can achieve in the future.
