Dragon Quest X [PC] (Commentary) #017, Kuon Forest: Boss: Leaf Spirit
This is video #017 in my Dragon Quest X for PC gameplay series.
Davilas the Elf Minstrel is currently working on the Tsusukuru storyline. He has acquired his first Ruura Stone in Tsusukuru village and upgraded his gear to the best available in town. Now, it is time to head to the forest in the northeast, Kuon Forest.
Before leaving, he picks up some Small Magic Waters in Tsusukuru's item shop (time 0:43). Though with as many Medicinal Herbs as he got at the start, it may not be strictly necessary. He also sleeps at the inn before going.
After preparing, Davilas heads out to Tsusukuru Plains (time 3:29). On the way to the northeast forest, he grabs some resources.
The entrance to Kuon Forest is at H-3 (time 8:34). The aim is to go east to the World Tree. I don't recommend taking the paths leading farther south because there are only black chests in that direction, and we don't have the key needed to open them yet. Along the path to the World Tree, there are Winksters, Healslimes, and Poison Silkworms. Look out for poison from the Poison Silkworms.
At the first left near the entrance, there is a farming spot for branches at A-2 (time 9:01).
At B-3, there are farming spots for cotton (time 11:07).
In this area, Davilas reaches Minstrel Level 9 (time 11:35).
In a cul-de-sac at C-2, there is a chest that contains an Evac-U-Bell (time 13:57).
In the southern shrubbery at C-3, there is a spot to farm for a branch (time 15:33). Behind the northern rock at C-3, there is a farming spot for another branch (time 15:51).
In a western dead end at E-3, there is a red chest containing 3 Small Magic Waters (time 23:00).
In the north of E-3, there are farming spots for cotton (time 23:58).
After a bit of battling in this zone, Davilas reaches Minstrel Level 10 (time 25:34). He gains 3 skill points and learns "Rukani," or Sap. For now, I plan to dump my skill points into the Minstrel vocation skill, "Kyokugei," called Litheness in DQ9. Now, there is a way to reset skill points later on. Unfortunately, skill points are NOT transferable between vocations in this game. For that matter, weapon skills cannot become omnivocational. That would be too easy!
The teleportal at eastern E-3 leads to the boss area at the base of the World Tree (time 27:51). The scenes with Kou and the Wood Spirit lead me to believe that this is a test.
Following the scene is a selection that seems to affect the difficulty. I have no idea what the upper and lower settings are, but the middle one is "normal."
Afterwards, it is time to fight the Leaf Spirit (time 29:37). That is not any official name; it is just my name for him. Google Translate of his name is "Spirit of the Young Leaves." He is a pretty easy first boss. He frequently wastes his turns, and his normal physical attack does middling damage. The meanest attack I've seen from him is "Bagi" or Woosh, an area-of-effect wind spell.
Not sure about other vocations, but it is pretty easy to solo him with a Minstrel at Level 10 and the best staff and armour from Tsusukuru. Since I was solo, his wind spell was much less annoying than it would have been with a party. The Minstrel's "Rukani" or Sap can be applied a couple of times to allow for decent damage. Heal and Medicinal Herbs will easily counteract his damage.
When the Leaf Spirit is defeated, Davilas reaches Minstrel Level 10 (time 32:16). He earns 3 skill points.
A very interesting scene will take place after the boss battle (time 32:45). The classmates Asanagi and Kyuusuke arrive, presumably to take the test themselves. After Asanagi gets owned, some bad stuff will happen.
During this, the game's real opening cinematic plays, YouTube permitting (time 35:50). This cinematic provides a brief introduction to each race's first hub city.
After the cinematic, we see that the World Tree has not escaped unscathed from the darkness issuing forth (time 37:21).
After the scenes, Davilas pours his skill points into "Kyokugei" or Litheness again (time 39:27). At 4 points, he learns "Boke." I believe this is Pratfall. When a character uses this skill, he tries to make an enemy laugh by dropping a pan on his own head. If the stunt succeeds, the character's tension goes up one level, and the enemy is stunned briefly.
Back in Tsusukuru village, Davilas heads back up to get another audience with Lady Himea by talking to the guard, Yonja (time 42:22). Asanagi and Kyuusuke are also party to an audience. When Asanagi and Kyuusuke leave, Himea reveals that she knows a bit about Davilas. Davilas will receive the Train Pass, which will allow him to ride the trains between each race's first hub city.
