It's funny. I'd been meaning to stream the second Klonoa ever since I played the first one back in 2019. In fact, that was actually when I was going to livestream Lunatea's Veil until I noticed something really put a crimp in those plans. But considering the fact that Bandai Namco finally remastered it, it's time to finally go back and see what all of the fuss is about. After all, I loved the original PS1 version of the first Klonoa, but remember being put off by its remake for the Wii. I was curious about how the sequel was going to turn out, considering that it came out between the two releases.

My first impression of the game -- if the episode title didn't give it away -- is that there are... way too many cutscenes. Like, way, way, *way* too many cutscenes. It got to the point where it felt like the actual gameplay were these short little pockets of interactivity designed to break up an early CGI cartoon at times. And it's like, I do want to see the story play out, but the fast-forward function might as well just be a second skip function. I'm going to look into whether or not I can turn down the speed, because if I can just keep everything at double-speed, that'd be fine. Otherwise, I guess I'll just have to keep bellyaching each time I'm forced to sit through multiple cutscenes in a row for the rest of this playthrough.

KI thinks I'm just shy of halfway through the game now. The Steam achievements paint a slightly rosier picture. Either way, I definitely plan on unlocking and clearing those two extra stages as well -- after all, I already got the first one unlocked in this section. And despite my issues with the pacing, I am enjoying the game otherwise. The boss fights are especially inventive. I'd just like to know how I came to the conclusion that this wasn't going to be another proper "2.5D platformer" like the first game was. For some reason, I had it in my head that it was going to be a full-on 3D platformer. Maybe it's just because once the PS2 was established, most developers seemed to treat anything that could even remotely be construed as being 2D as anathema throughout the remainder of the sixth generation.
