One of the more difficult bosses in a SL1 playthrough in my opinion, but the no hit part really doesn't make much of a difference to me as Aava one shots you most of the time regardless. The lingering hit boxes meaning you need to dodge precisely. That's why I chose a weapon that you can equip without rings to maximize my adaptability. I also infuse it with fire because I find the damage to be superior along the length of the fight, rather than bothering with resins.
By killing Aava, I can finally obtain the Vessel Shield, which is the best stat boosting item in Dark Souls 2 (1+ to VIG/END/ADP/INT/FTH and +4 to STR/DEX).
