DUKE NUKEM 3D LET'S PLAY (#18): Bizarre (1999)
After last week, I wanted to go in a wildly different direction and in my quest to create a thumbnail for a completely different map I was aiming for, I stumbled across Bob Masters and it all seemed so Bizarre... From what I gather, he wanted to not build a conventional map, but something to really stretch what could be done with the editor and the game. I'm not sure what that means, but the screenshots and description of his maps intrigued me enough where I felt it would be a dramatic departure from what we've played recently. So to start things off, it's 2Bizarre, a remake of the map that triggered this adventure.
(EDIT: I don't think 2Bizarre is a remake. Maybe a compatibility update. I had my wires crossed.)
That led to Asylum (2000), the next of Bob's maps, and it felt more directional, with a clever example of silent teleports to create not just a narrative throughout, but show ways to create new gameplay tricks with time using them.
We finished it all off with 2121 A.D. (2002), which is sadly the last of Bob Master's creations before he stopped mapping that I know of. We have his original two-part debut, Orion Prime, we'll save for the future, but the cityscape he created in this very much visually struck a cord. It made me just want to know the answer to what else he could've created if he continued mapping for Duke 3D.
What we do in these streams is showcase user created content to show what kind of passion and creativity this niche community has crafted to show others what Duke Nukem 3D has to offer for any Retro Boom Shooter FPS lovers, or even old Duke Fans (like myself) who may have not dipped their toes into the user content world. Additionally, we take a look at how these 2.5D games create their 3D world from a level design perspective as I try to learn from those who came before me since I'm currently making a map of my own for Duke Nukem 3D using Mapster32, the included level editor for eDuke32.
