DUKE NUKEM 3D LET'S PLAY (#17): Wet-Dry World (2021)
This Saturday, we play the last Wet-Dry World, a recreation or reinterpretation of the stage of the same name from Super Mario 64, but with guns since its Duke Nukem. This is another entry in a series of maps made by ToiletDuck64, taking Duke Nukem on an adventure through various stages from the Nintendo 64 Mario entry, with the others being Snowman's Land and Big Boo's Haunt. Those maps really captured the look of that first 3D Mario title with some nicely used True-Room-Over-Room (TROR) effects, something that can go unappreciated if you don't know how the sauce is made, so it'll fun to see how they tackled this one. UPDATE: They tackled it pretty well! While I still can't get Polymer to run smoothly for me, I do believe the use of the Shrinker as a light source in those darkened areas. The ending, with the floor blowing out to show the whole level in TROR glory was great.
After that romp, we took a run through "Last Pissed Time" a 2009 released map by Maxim Chinyakin (Lezing), which I mistakenly thought as going to be a more traditional map, which I could calmly play to wind down the stream, turned into a gauntlet. It is filled with so many cool builds, which fully classify as "Build P*rn", but the puzzles, while extremely clever and intricate, were just not as readable. I think this map should have been saved for its own stream, I truly enjoyed it, but my energy levels weren't ready for it. I also felt that the areas didn't flow or link back to each other, which ended up being my main gripe with the backtracking required.
What we do in these streams is showcase user created content to show what kind of passion and creativity this niche community has crafted to show others what Duke Nukem 3D has to offer for any Retro Boom Shooter FPS lovers, or even old Duke Fans (like myself) who may have not dipped their toes into the user content world. Additionally, we take a look at how these 2.5D games create their 3D world from a level design perspective as I try to learn from those who came before me since I'm currently making a map of my own for Duke Nukem 3D using Mapster32, the included level editor for eDuke32.
