🏰🐉 Dungeon Masters and Players Playing Two Different Games GM 911
Players drop dice for different reasons. These players seem to want to just kill and murder. In case the Game Master Seems to be trying to tell a story while the players don't seem that interested in going along with the adventures being laid out.
Original GM 911
My players seem to go for head on fights regardless of what Ive foreshadowed to them. Can you give examples of ways to foreshadow?
Context
The party of 5 came across a tent in the middle of the road on their travels. As soon as they spotted it the Rogue and Wizard could sense alot of powerful magic inside. Upon getting closer to the tent (which was 20x30 ft) they could hear things falling over as well as cursing. Next to the tent EVERYONE could sense the magic regardless of whether they have arcane abilities or not. Once they looked inside they saw an elf stranger(who was actually an archmage) trying to catch some flying(animated) books which were knocking over bookshelves and sending scrolls crashing to the floor.
Once the elf managed to end the spell he told the party that his animate objects spell combined with another spell, and he lost control of the books. Despite all this the barbarian and the wizard decided they were able to tag team him. Short Conclusion: They froze to death. Long Conclusion: The elf did nothing but warn them the first round (taking 20 odd damage), then proceeded to protect himself by using cone of cold on those two alone. I even rolled damage infront of the players and said he casts cone of cold (all the players are familiar with this spell).
Additional info
The party is level 2
The rogue was a gnome whose backstory was he grew up around wizards (which was why he sensed the magic at the same time the wizard did)
The campaign is sandbox (skyrim style) and the group is leaning to a more evil side
The archmage was going to be their ally(potions/knowledge) and is to the survivors (he was already familiar with one character from their background)
world context - they were heading to an abandoned mine to find some gems, the archmage told them that the nearby hobgoblins were also heading to the mine
