Let's start with Monster Zoos.
Things are like zits; hit them hard and puss and fail gets everywhere.
However, treat one like a butterfly and slowly choke/bottleneck it death... actually, that's not how one treats a butterfly, but that aside, you can't dive into a Monster Zoo (on normal progression). Takes planning, tools and heroic fleeing.

I mean, there's obviously a relation. Monster Zoo... Monster Zit! Both sound awful and dangerous when tackled unprepared, as well as grossing out even the most steeled stomach. That and the words... they're so similar! The acronym is the same! Undoubtebly, Monster Zoos were Zits in pre-alpha stages, when Dungeons of Dredmor was Defeater of Danger, a child in puberty who faces the consiquences of chocolate and hormones.

Proof? The acronym! The words... Puss... Fleck... love filled with pain... fail? All puberty things!
Diggles... are just horrible monsters, with giant noses by adult growth. Popular kids who stick their noses into your business and mock you!
Deth? The goths from behind the alley, glaring and judging you, cursing you into darkness with cheap copies of the Necronomicon.
And Brax... the cheating bastard is none other than the drug bandit himself. He knows what you need, and you'll be ripped off in the process. And if you dare rip HIM off, he'll kill you. Walk over and beat you to death with his many gang members.

The dungeons, school, of course! Dredmor is the apathic, dehumanised principle, and you're sentenced to face him by your parents!

But who are you, the hero? Whoever you wish to be. Each archetype is connected. Warrior are Jocks, Wizards are Nerds and Rogues are the bad boys. These elements combined form YOU, the doomed one. But as you wade through the marshes of school, you learn how to cheat the system... how to escape school. How to be free.

Floors are elevations of the school. Higher up are higher, more adult, more skilled students, who posses more ways to make your life hell. "Elements" are nothing but words and damage is... just physical harm.

How can you be so certain this is not that? A thinly hidden metaphor for the horrors of high school?

Then again, it MIGHT just be a roguelike and I'm just being silly.
