Dust: An Elysian Tail | Final Review

Hello and welcome back to the channel. This video will serve as my final review for the game Dust: An Elysian tale.
Full disclosure; I haven't finished this game yet, but I just don't find myself ever in the mood to play it anymore.
The game is by no means bad, it's just not compelling. Like I said I never find myself wanting to play it. If you followed my Let's Play series
then you know towards the end I was really struggling to stay motivated. To not rant too much I'll breakdown what I liked about it and the parts where it fell short.

The Good:
As far as the overall art style: the environments, the character design, and overall ascetic, I really liked it. It looks good and the tone is generally bright and fun.
It reminds me of like an anime or morning cartoon.
The best part about the game though is the mechanics and controls. The combat and overall movement of your character just feels good. Everything is responsive and flows nicely.
Your combos and how the movement controls work with it are pretty darn good, but that brings me to where it falls short.

The Bad:
For how good the combat controls are the combat gets really dull, really quick. You only ever have the one weapon and one move set for it. Sure you unlock some other techniques
as the game goes on but you never really get away from the same tried and true techniques. Their's just no variety. I even mention it several times in my playthrough,
that I'm just using the same moves and combos over and over since they work the best and have little room for error.
Then next area I felt wasn't compelling was the personality of the characters. The main character Dust is your typical mysterious swordsmen with amnesia and his sidekick is
just the comic relief. That's it the rest of the characters are just filler. Even the talking sword feels like all it does is dispense plot points.

Conclusion:
To finish up, I don't think I'll re-visit this game anytime soon. It played well enough, but that's it. Oddly enough the only reason I started the game was b/c it was recommended
on Steam after I played The Vagrant, a much better game. Even though the Vagrant also only ever has one weapon type, you still have different varieties of them. Some have more damage but slower to hit while others faster with less damage. Some even have different elemental effects. Their's also a character progression system so two people are never going to have the same experience and you can tailor it to your preferred style.

Like I said overall not a bad game just not interesting enough. I honestly couldn't geninely reccomend it even for the most die-hard platformer fan.
Even the oldest Castelvania games had different weapons and items to mix things up.
So unfortunately I won't be finishing the game, at least not on YouTube. I have other games I'm looking to play and other content I'm working on. That being said if their is a game you think I'd like and want to see a playthrough or just want me to discuss it let me know in the comments. If you enjoyed this video please subscribe. Thank you again for watching and I'll catch you in the next one.
