Dwelling Sin + Fixed Camera | DBP58: The Conflict | No Failure Run
I always start off describing a new thing as interesting or fascinating, but I can't help myself. It's not everyday you see a Doom mod that actually implements proper fixed camera systems in a universal way. While there are some mods that toy around with the idea of fixed cameras, there hasn't really been any that tries to do things in a way that'll theoretically work with any mapset.
Granted, there's a very good reason why. Maps are unpredictable, and the way mappers detail their maps could very much result in the cameras being put in weird places. Surveillance, another one of Jarewill's addons, certainly tried its best to figure out a middle ground. However, it remains an experimental addon that will likely not work with a lot of mapsets, especially high detail ones.
So when you see me running a map like this, one questions if perhaps I'm a bit over my head in mixing a high detail map where the camera could potentially swap in every little new linedef I pass. Thankfully, this test ended up going pretty decently, which is why I decided to go ahead and do a whole run to see if completing a map this way is possible.
Now, there are a few caveats to having a fixed camera system. Because of how the game is still primarily comprised of sprites, aiming becomes particularly tricky. I could load in DACOTE, a class in DSin that has a lasersight for his SMG, but there's still the other weapons and items to contend with. I can't just disable freelook 'cause I need to look down in order to pick up items, so I quickly need to cobble up a hackjob solution.
In comes m8f's Lasersight addon! Perfect. Well, I still want to make the lasersight in DSin worth something even with this thing on, so I modified the addon just a notch to make the red laser disappear if I'm aiming past a certain distance. Makes aiming a pinch difficult here and there, but it fits well with what I seek with this mod theming, so that's what I'm going with.
Overall, a fun mod combo. Might do this again someday with a map that won't switch my cameras as much. Definitely the kind of addon that benefits from simpler maps with more defined boundaries.
