Undertale is a role-playing video game created by indie developer Toby Fox. The game was released for Microsoft Windows and OS X on September 15, 2015.

Players control a human child who has fallen into the Underground, a large, secluded region underneath the surface of the Earth, separated by a magic barrier. The human interacts with many monsters while on a quest to return to the surface, including opponents the player must decide whether to kill or talk out of the fight. Some of these decisions are made through the game's turn-based combat system, in which the player, after navigating through mini-bullet hell segments, can opt to talk or spare monsters instead of attacking and killing them. The choices made by the player directly affect the story, with the dialogue, opponents, and story outcome changing based on their decisions.

Fox developed the entire game by himself, which included writing all the dialogue as well as composing the music, with only additional art by various people. It was financed through a successful crowdfunding campaign, and was in development for over two years. Inspirations for the game include the Mother and Mario & Luigi role-playing game series, the bullet hell shooter series Touhou Project, and the comedy show Mr. Bean.

Undertale was acclaimed by reviewers for its writing, moral themes, intuitive combat system, score, and originality, with particular praise directed at its story, dialogue, and characters. The game has sold over a million copies, and was nominated for multiple year-end accolades, including Game of the Year from several gaming publications. High sales, a dedicated fanbase, and an immediate strong following led various outlets to consider Undertale an instant classic.
