Electronic Super Joy - First play
2022-01-07. First play of this platformer.
Pros:
pretty unique, captive graphics
simple platformer, easy to learn
tutorial system has minimal text for the most part
Cons:
jump mechanics are unbalanced; highest point is about 1 pixel short of the next possible block
many of the default block distances (and bouncing stars/arrows) are slightly off such that you constantly have to adjust when you expect the jumping to flow smoothly
the game teaches you that you can bounce on arrows, then expects you to understand that you travel through them; if misunderstood you die. The game should teach the mechanics without requiring learning the hard way. The worst teaching is showcasing in a method that leads you to believe the wrong mechanic to later learn it's wrong.
the warps require you to understand what's going to arrive before you see it, including the warps you have to travel back to get, and also ones that transport you forward without any visibility.
warps that transport you to somewhere you cannot see should not have a single block to land on; allow the use to move quickly and not have to be careful at unexpected tricky level design that accomplishes nothing except annoying deaths.
the flashing visuals that are full screen are just annoying; it does not replace good gameplay.
