Even the best fish tales come to an end | Dredge | Pale Reach DLC (Finale)
Trying out Dredge, the hot new fishing sim all the kids are talking about. What could be more relaxing than going out on the open water, breathing the fresh sea air, and making a tidy living while feeding an entire community? Sure, there's talk of strange behavior, unexplained lights out at sea, and bizarre-looking fish hopping into your hold, but what seaside community doesn't have its share of colorful character and local legends? I'm sure everything will be fine.
All good things, etc. and so forth. We begin by wrapping up the main quest for the Devil's Spine biome, finding the last of the flames and clearing the way to the end game (1:28:25). We're not in a hurry, though, so we linger for a bit to finish out side quests and get one of the best pieces of equipment in the game (1:34:00). We then progress to other side quests, including finding the last of the rare fish for the Traveling Merchant (1:51:40) and doing fetch quests for a series of hooded figures with questionable dining etiquette -- Blue (starts 2:25:55), Gold (3:10:50), Purple (3:43:00), and Red (4:10:00). I don't want to spoil the endings for those who want to keep up the mystery, so all I'll say there is the final sequence starts at 4:33:00. A second playthrough with the new DLC has done nothing to shake me from my stance that Dredge is 1 or 1A for my 2023 Game of the Year. A well-told story in a memorable, haunting atmosphere with good gameplay in a package that respects the player's time. There are sprawling 80-100 hour open-world epics galore out there, but I don't have the time or energy to play those these days. Give me more games like Dredge and I will be a happy camper.
