We're trying out A Highland Song, the latest release from Inkle Studios! Moira McKinnon is running away from home, having a received a letter from her uncle Hamish telling her to come to his lighthouse as fast as she can. Her journey takes her through the wild beauty of the Scottish Highlands, all set to a soundtrack featuring royalty from the Scottish festival scene. It won't be easy, though, as the hills and peaks are treacherous for the unprepared and unwary. Can Moira get to her uncle in time for Beltane?

First impressions of the game are quite positive. The aforementioned soundtrack is an absolute banger, and the art style is gorgeous. There are a few flaws here and there that do impinge on the gameplay, though. For example, I seem to have found a bugged conversation with an NPC (20:40) that left a dialogue bubble on screen for the rest of the stream and initially prevented Moira from interacting with anything else. The mechanic requiring you to be on top of a mountain peak to do any kind of orienteering and unlocking shortcuts can also be time-consuming and frustrating. It's easy to get lost or find yourself giving back a day's progress while trying to pick your way to a new path. I don't want to give the impression that there's more bad than good, though -- quite the opposite. The platforming and rhythm sections force you to pay attention but aren't overly demanding, letting you focus on exploration and discovery. There are also several accessibility options for those who need them. All told I'm glad I gave A Highland Song a chance, and I will continue this run to see how the story ends.
