Road to 500, Day 403: An action-packed return to HRV | The Long Dark | Buried Echoes DLC
The plan is simple. Taking part in the Backpacker Rally challenge gave me pleasant memories of playing Stalker, so we're dusting off Achievement Astrid and going for the last achievement still on the board: survive 500 days. I haven't touched this file for months, so as we pursue that goal we'll be searching out all the unique recipes, making them, and finding the new prepper caches. I'm a task-oriented player, so this is all to help keep me focused while chasing a long-term goal.
We're in the last 100 days of this pursuit, but that doesn't mean things are going to get boring. The stream starts with Astrid taking care of business she should've attended to the last time, bringing down the Bridge Bear in Milton to make exploration safer and have another cured bear hide on hand (8:45). After finding its carcass, harvesting it, hauling it to the trailer -- by hand, none of this travois nonsense -- and cooking it, Astrid can finally get down to the business of crafting her bearskin coat (2:06:00). It's the first one of these I've made, and while losing 20 percent of the sprint bar is a lot, I can see why people think so highly of them. The 30 hours needed to craft the bear coat gets us to 30 days in Milton/Mountain Town/Milton, so then it's off to Hushed River Valley.
And what a return to HRV! Not long after returning to this lovely region, Astrid is set upon by three wolves just outside her favorite cave (2:50:15). She also discovers a new post-update bug, with carcasses that still have harvestable materials suddenly vanishing into thin air. The plan at this point was to head to the secondary base at Monolith Lake and look for the moose there, but lo and behold the moose was waiting for Astrid in the HRV basin. I'm still not sure why -- it's not as though chat was egging me on out of bloodlust -- but the decision was made to hunt said moose. Unfortunately, the bug(?) that made flare gun shots unable to kill moose is still in effect, so two flare shells to the head and four arrows were not enough to bring it down. Waiting too long on a third flare gun shot results in Astrid getting moose stomped (3:43:25) in one of the worst places in the game to have broken ribs. She does get her revenge (3:47:40), and in true TLD tradition the game responds with back-to-back blizzards and an aurora. The moose meat means Astrid has enough food to eat while recovering, but she doesn't have any painkillers on her, so unless there's a bunch of unpicked rose hips, she might have to engineer a way out of the ravine despite having her carrying capacity heavily nerfed.
