스트리트 파이터 EX 2

1998년 발매된 스트리트 파이터 EX 시리즈의 두번째. 2년만이니만큼 그래픽은 어느 정도 좋아졌다.

EX 플러스 알파에서 등장했던 달심이 정식 캐릭터로 등장하고 발로그(꼬챙이), 블랑카가 기존 2시리즈로부터 차출되어 등장한다.

오리지널 신캐릭터로는 가루다를 쫓는 퇴마검사 하야테, 장미 문신을 지니고 있는 초일류 에이전트 샤론, 호쿠토의 여동생 나나세, 다크 히어로 섀도우 가이스트가 추가. 이외 신규 캐릭터는 아니지만 카이리는 호쿠토 덕분에 맛이 가서 백발이 되어버린 모습으로 확 바뀌어서 등장한다.

추가된 캐릭터만큼이나 삭제된 캐릭터도 상당수 있는데 달심과 똑같이 EX 플러스 알파의 추가 캐릭터였던 사쿠라는 등장하지 않고 고우키, 이빌 류, 피의 봉인이 풀린 호쿠토, 사이클로이드 시리즈, 풀룸 플루나, 앨런 스나이더, 블레어 데임이 삭제됐다.

슈퍼캔슬 타이밍이 이전에 비해 아주 널럴해졌고 전작을 베이스로 신시스템이 몇몇 추가되었는데, 오리지널 콤보와 비슷한 엑셀 콤보 시스템이 추가되었다. 게이지 1줄을 소모하며 지속 시간은 꽤 짧지만 발동 순간(15 프레임) 무적이 있고 지속 시간이 끝난 뒤에도 콤보를 이어나갈 수 있기 때문에 중요한 시스템. 다만 같은 필살기를 연속으로 사용할 수는 없었고 모으기 커맨드 필살기의 경우 엑셀이 발동된 상황에서도 저 저축 시간을 꼬박꼬박 지켜야만 필살기를 쓸 수 있었기 때문에 생각했던 것보다 엑셀 연속기의 자유도가 많이 낮은 편이었고 그래서인지 이 당시에는 엑셀 시스템에 대한 연구가 많이 미진했었다.

또한 가드 브레이크기를 각종 필살기들에서 캔슬해서 사용할 수 있는 캔슬 브레이크 시스템도 추가되었다. 대신 상대를 캔슬 브레이크로 맞출 시 기존 가드 브레이크보다 주는 경직시간이 짧다. 사실상 캔슬 브레이크 후에 슈캔이 아니면 추가타를 넣기 어려울 정도.

일본 이외의 모든 리전에서는 삭제요소가 있는데, 엔딩 텍스트가 출력되지 않고 THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR PLAYING!! SEE YOU AT OUR NEXT GAME!!로 퉁쳤으며, 쉐도우 가이스트 전용 스테이지의 배경 그림이 삭제되었다. 이 때문에 쉐도우 스테이지에서 시점변경으로 글자무리를 하나하나씩 보게 되는 엔딩 스탭롤이 바닥만 있고 텅 빈 회색 배경으로 나오는 상당히 휑해진 광경으로 전개된다. 일부 리전에 한해서는 아예 하야테 칸이 없어져서 선택불가능해지는 기판도 있는데, 이 경우 게임 부팅시 메시지가 노란색이 된다.


Street Fighter EX 2

Street Fighter EX2 is a 2.5D fighting game co-produced by Capcom and Arika originally released in 1998 as an arcade game for the Sony ZN-2 hardware. It is a sequel to Street Fighter EX and the second main game in the EX series. A updated version of the game titled Street Fighter EX2 Plus was released in 1999 for the arcades as well and subsequently ported to the PlayStation.


Gameplay

The original version of Street Fighter EX2 retains all the features from the previous game, Street Fighter EX Plus, including original features such as "Guard Breaks" (unique moves which cannot be blocked by an opponent) and "Super Canceling" (the ability to cancel a Super Combo into another Super Combo).

The primary new feature in the game are "Excel Combos", ("excel" being abbreviation for "extra cancel"). Much like the "Custom Combos" featured in the Street Fighter Alpha series, Excel Combos allows player to connect a series of basic and special moves for a limited time. During an Excel Combo, the player begins with a basic move and can follow up with a different basic move or follow-up a basic move with a special move, which can be followed by a different special move. However, the player cannot connect any move with the same move, nor can they cancel special moves into basic moves during an Excel Combo.


Characters

Recurring Street Fighter characters Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Zangief and Guile, who were all in the original Street Fighter EX, return for EX2, along with original characters Hokuto, Skullomania, Doctrine Dark, and Cracker Jack. Dhalsim, who was in the PlayStation version of Street Fighter EX Plus Alpha, also returns along four additional characters new to EX series: Blanka and Vega from previous Street Fighter games, along with new characters Sharon (a gun-wielding hitwoman) and Hayate (a Japanese swordsman).

The game also features four hidden characters: Kairi from the original EX returns as a hidden challenger, along with new characters Shadowgeist (a costumed vigilante similar to Skullomania) and Nanase (a young girl who wields a staff). Garuda, also from the original EX, returns as a boss character. All four characters can be selected by the player after meeting certain requirements. A Cycloid character that resembles Cycloid-β from the original EX is also unlockable via a cheat device.


Trivia

◾Nine characters from the original Street Fighter EX fail to return in EX2; Akuma, Allen Snider, Blair Dame, Bloody Hokuto, Cycloid-β, Cycloid-γ, Pullum Purna, Darun Mister, Evil Ryu and Sakura Kasugano. However, Pullum and Darun would return to Street Fighter EX2 Plus, while Bloody Hokuto, Evil Ryu, and Sakura would later return in Street Fighter EX3.

◾Ken's voice was provided by Gō Yamane instead of Tetsuya Iwanaga in this game but Tetsuya Iwanaga would return to provide Ken's voice in Street Fighter EX3.
