For very large or very small numbers, it is sometimes simpler to use "scientific notation." Refer to the image below for the general form for scientific notation.

In order to convert 23,415 into scientific notation, start to the right of the last digit and count how many decimals back it takes for the number to be greater than or equal to one and less than 10. The number of decimal places it takes is the exponential number.
