Presented at EclipseCon 2023 in Ludwigsburg, Germany by Matthias Feurer (SOTEC GmbH+Co KG).

In this session we would like to present how customers migrated from Google Cloud IoT Core to Eclipse Hono. Google Cloud IoT Core is a managed IoT platform from Google that will be finally shut down in August 2023.
After giving a short introduction to the specifics of Google’s managed IoT platform we will show why Eclipse Hono on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) is the perfect choice for replacing it. We will briefly present our development work on Eclipse Hono which included adding a JWT based private/public key device authentication, adding Google Cloud Pub/Sub as another messaging service, implementing the “config” and “state” features from Cloud Iot Core, adding a new REST API for device communication and implementing a Web UI admin frontend.
We will then present the experience of a real world migration project of one of our customers including their specific challenges and requirements and how we solved those together with them. We expect to have a co-speaker from our customer giving the experience first hand.

As we are currently seeing a consolidation of managed IoT Platforms (Google, SAP, IBM, Bosch), we think that attendees of this session will be excited to see how customers managed to migrate to an Open Source alternative and how happy they are with it.
