I built an ion ray gun following the plans on Robert Iannini's book "Electronic Gadgets for the Evil Genius". This video shows some experiments I performed with it and points out the similarities between this real device and the fictional proton pack from Ghostbusters.

An ion ray gun circuit diagram can be found at: http://www.freeinfosociety.com/article.php?id=113 . This one, however, is more sophisticated as it uses two 555 timers, one as an oscillator (determines the repetition rate) and another one as a pulser (determines the duty cycle).
