A video of frantically freezing my way through Fairy Wars extra stage.

Fairy Wars is the 12.8 installment of the Touhou Project, a franchise of danmaku shooters of inconsistent difficulty and humble origins. But mostly inconsistent origins. Hard to have humility when you have an entire convention dedicated to you, right ZUN?

I might be late for the party, but wasn't much of a party without me, right? Right? Nah, just joking.

I think in my last Ex-stage, the UFO one, I said that was the hardest Ex-stage. Scratch that, this one is now the new champion. Personally I found Fairy Wars a pretty refreshing game, short and sweet. But hard. VERY HARD. However, from what I've seen the reaction to the game's difficulty is mixed. Some people found it easy, other found it hard, and some were in the inconclusive and not really all that important middle.

This extra stage, as an extension of my opinion on the subject of difficulty, was pretty hard to master. Knowing when to freeze is practically an art. Freeze too early and the bullets will skewer. Too late and the bullets that escaped will skewer you. Freeze at the right time and you still have to figure out what will you do with the fire bullets and the everything else that wants to skewer you after your shield breaks and you discover you have less than 50% of Ice Power available. Sure 30% is enough to activate it, but not really to use it.

Despite this, I dare to say the stage is there for you to try and fill your Motivation and Ice Area as much as possible. There are quite a lot of parts where you can get a pretty good freeze area and in most of those you'll need to do it in order to clear the screen. Trust me when I say you'll need as much fire (ice?) power and Motivation as possible for the boss.

The mid bosses, Lily White and Daiyousei (I'm amused at how ZUN tries his best to avoid mentioning her name) are a fair challenge, but nothing outstanding. I mean, they are fairy, they don't do much. Although I like to believe Lily likes to draw beautiful landscape and be inspired by the works of the great Renaissance artist in her spare time. You know, after she gets methodically beaten by announcing spring? She's a classical tragic character in a farce. Are there tragic characters in farce?
