TD Demo: Touhou Ten Desires (Hard Mode)
"Blank blank blank"
A video of me blasting and slashing, and slashing and blasting my way through the Ten Desires demo as our half-ghost gardener, Youmu Konpaku.
Ten Desires [東方神霊廟~ Ten Desires (romanized: Touhou Shinreibyou, lit. Eastern Divine Spirit Temple)], is the thirteen game of the Touhou Project series. The Touhou Project is a series of games where the artwork is much like life, which at the same time is much like a rollercoaster: it has its up and down, is short and sweet, but ultimately let you feeling you could had employed those two hours making the line in something more productive, leaving you hollow and empty. Oh, and flying lolis fight to save the land.
Before the rant, I want to say "Hey there, long time no see." As you can hear (or will hear if you're anything like me), this time around I added the regular vocal Let's Play. This will NOT be a normal feature for many reasons:
A) English is not my main language.
B) Playing and talking at the same time is distracting.
C) I cannot give the same depth I give to annotations, which I ended using anyways.
D) English is not my main language.
I added my, oh so cacophonic, voice to the video due to the nature of it. Since it is merely a demo of the game, which hasn't been released, I considered this a nice chance to try it out. Since Fraps hates my guts, I have to run Audacity on the background in order to record. This causes my PC to go on a psychotic breakdown. So yeah... FML.
Anyways, let's talk about the game. Ten Desires take a page from Fairy Wars and keeps part of the interface used in that game. Mainly the whole "Circle of Life" thing. It combines this with aspect from previous game. Now, call me old fashioned, but I found the original system -128 Power, Individual bombs, Life bar on the top left corner- to be the best. I don't particularly mind the 4.00 system (except when it was linked to the bombs), but the "Circle of Life" kind of bugs me. Personally, it destroy a little of the immersion for me.
This game has a heavy focus on spirits. After all, the incident this time around is "Weird spirit coming out of bodies. Shoot things until you find the culprit". This time around the gimmick is the divine spirit and trance system. Keep in mind I didn't knew this term while blindly playing through the demo because I don't read Japanese. And even if I did. =/
Basically, instead of colored UFOs, we have colored spirits we must collect. 10 pieces of either red or green gives you a life or bomb. Blue ones give you points while white ones raise your spiritual realm bar faster. The spiritual realm is, more or less, a substitute to the deathbomb mechanic. As in, you cannot deathbomb in this game if you have at least one spiritual realm. That sucks.
Getting hit while having at least one Spiritual bar full will activate Trance Mode, where your character will go berserk until the timer runs out. Apparently you can activate Trance Mode if you have full bars or something. All in all, the game mechanics were fun to play with. I particularly loved Youmu's slash mechanic. Even though it forces you to play unfocused on long range, it injects freshness to the game. Too bad the other three heroines are a little more of the same.
Overall, the game looks promising. Maybe a little too standard. I don't really like that I'm seeing a lot of characters from previous games. The music wasn't anything spectacular, but I'm sure that's because I was talking while playing. And I had to let SA music grow on me for me to start liking it. The game is pretty rough and I hope ZUN will polish it more. Too bad this won't happen for the art, which I find a step backward from UFO. Also, is a little on the easy side.
Well, space here is running out. I'm looking forward to this game. A lot. Other videos will still have to wait. My teachers are being merciless. I took a Physic's test yesterday and I have another one the Monday after Holy Week. And I still have to more tests plus the final exam before the end of the semester on June. And that is only one class. Fun times. I'll try to do as best as I can, but right now I'm also hooked with a MMO, Rift... so yeah.
