Dog fighting mode should be employed if you are within visual distance of the target, it is strictly for close quarter air combat. With this mode, you can get radar gun locks. This mode can be used in conjunction with ACM(Air Combat Mode) Bore sight mode which allows you to get a visual lock on the target. You will not have to use this most of the time, because you will get automatic locks when your nose(radar) is pointed towards your target. In dog fighting mode, the locks are circular. You can employ either missiles or cannons. This reticle automatically calculates where you shot be aiming your cannon, so you don't have to guess where to aim. Without it, you would have to aim your gun ahead of the target to estimate the point of impact. The aircrafts avionics automatically calculates where the point of impact is with the radar information.
The cannons can only be employed at very close ranges, like 0 meters to 700 meters. If you employs missiles, you can employ AIM-9s, or AIM-120s. I don't see the point of using a medium range missile like AIM-120s at such close ranges. Using such weapons is more useful in BVR(Beyond Visual Range) combat. As for employing missiles like the AIM-9 Sidewinders, the most effective way to use it is to get behind your target. The AIM-9 tracks the heat signature on an aircraft, and the engine exhausts release the most heat. AIM-9s can be easily fooled by flares, and you also have to use countermeasures when someone locks on you. The best way to employ missiles at such short range is by aiming your missile ahead of the target. Also if you are perpendicular from your target, and your target is going left to right. You have to bank to the right then you can get behind your enemy. Use your airbrakes (B), and bank hard to the right. Then, just put a Sidewinder in his tail pipe.
When you use dog fighting mode, you should just rely on your HUD. Don't waste any time looking at the cockpit instrumentation. All the information you need, like your velocity, your altitude, range of locked target, heading, Gs, and weapon system deployed is on that screen. In close quarter combat, you can't waste any time, or you will be dead. All your time should be used to track your targets and threats visually, because your enemy is very close.
